  • Our Lights On Event was fantastic! October 18th we celebrated by inviting local artists to our site who showed our students first hand how to make beautiful, detailed patterns, and even did live draws using the students and a professional roller derby model. Over 100 students from our elementary school were on hand as well as their friends and families.

  • The small community of Darby, Montana celebrated the National Lights On Event with the theme of Water & Wood. Water showcasing what the after school students were learning about Lighthouses and Wood showcasing the Montana version in Fire Lookouts. Three organization came together to plan and execute the event: the after school program known as X-TREME Team, the Darby PTA and the Darby School Family Center. Close to 200 students and parents came to participate in games such as Lighthouse Scavenger Hunt, Color Me Light Bulb, Listen & Learn activity about Lighthouses and Lookouts and (the most popular) Musical Beach Towels. All the children received free books and a delicious homemade meal of chili and/or chicken noodle soup was enjoyed by everyone. Just days before the event, a tragedy took place in Darby. A woman who was a cashier in the only grocery store in town died suddenly of a massive stroke. She left behind three young children, a husband and massive medical bills due to trying to save her life. The community and the students were in shock. It was decided that the Lights On Over Wood & Water committee would gather donations to give to the family in their time of tragedy. This small community of people came together that night to celebrate the success of after school programs and raised well over $500 to donate to one of their own families in need. All-in-all, the event was a huge success. Everyone went home with something in their hands as well as their hearts!

  • Our Lights On event on October 18th was a great success. We had 500 people attend a celebration for after school programs in St. Mary's County, Maryland. We held it in a pavilion shaped like a lighthouse in Chancellors Run Park. We gave awards to our county commissioners for providing $250,000 to keep two of our after school programs open. Another award went to county residents Pam Harmon and Tim Muris, for donating $52,000 for three after school programs. The third award went to the Kiwanis of St. Mary's County for organizing and operating two service clubs in our after school programs. Our Local Management Board was recognized for funding five after school programs for the past five years. In addition, we had demonstrations of after school activities, including Chess, Gardening, Step Club, and Money Matters. We had a Moon Bounce and Climbing Wall, and dinner for all.

  • The KIDSConnect Afterschool Program (Educational Council) of Southeastern Franklin County in Ohio held events to celebrate "Lights on Afterschool" for two of our site locations. The Canal Winchester Middle School program celebrated the day with a city wide open house. Parents and community members took the time to come together and discuss the importance of programming by sharing personal stories, play games, eat food, and enjoy artwork and projects completed by the students. Rosemore Middle School partnered with Communities in Schools (another local afterschool program) to celebrate with an open house as well. Local community members discussed the importance of afterschool programming; families provided food and participated in several group games. Attendees included students, families, school staff, city council members and the newly elected Mayor. Both events were very successful in promoting awareness of and showing the value in afterschool programming.
