For our program we notified the principal/superintendent, and other business leaders in our area to invite them to share in this special night celebrating afterschool programs. Our event was a family night and started with a time of refreshments and "Greet the Teacher" time. Then we gave a program that included explanations of both afterschool programs at our school followed by brief explanation of the Afterschool Alliance and Lights on Afterschool. Then we went into the fun part of our event. Each teacher set up a center which included a fall themed book and a craft or activitiy that went along with the book. The families were encouraged to go to each place and hear the story and make the craft. We read books like "There was an old Woman who Swallowed a Bat" and made flapping bats. We read ghoulish books and each person was allowed to make their own "Ghoul finger Pen" out of Crayola Model Magic and fake fingernails. You get the idea! All of the families who attended had a great time and thanked us for providing such positive programs for our students. It was nice for us as well to hear such appreciation for the work to do to ensure our students find learning a fun and rewarding experience.

Our Lights On Celebration brought over 90 guests to experience the activities that our middle school students participate in. Parents painted candleholders with their youth, helped sew quilts for foster children, learned from their children how to use GPS units and much more. In addition displays of other activities were available for them along with "good nutrition" displays from ISU extension and the medical center. A nutritious meal was served by volunteer parents.

Sundowners Afterschool Program @ Hermitage RIV celebrated "Lights ON" by holding an open house. The children prepared all the food for our guests and invited several local celebrities and Mrs. Busch. Mrs. Busch sent the children a beautiful letter and some wonderful pictures of her pets, the White House, Airforce One, and President Busch and herself. The children also had a very special visit from one of our local Lucas Oil Dirt Track Racers, Eric Turner. Eric brought his race car and let the children sit in the drivers seat, he also took them into his trailer and showed them all his tools and race gear. Afterwards he signed autographs and colored a Light Bulb for the children to send to Congress.

This year we decided to join efforts with other after school providers in our city. We called the event Lights On Afterschool in the City! the event was a great success. Agencies had the opportunity to display what activities they offer to the students in our L.I.F.E. Extended Day Program. Also others afterschool providers like the YMCA, YWCA, Lancaster Recreation Commission, Bright Side Opportunity Center and others were able to display and talk to parents about their offerings. As part of their display, the Puppet club providers included a puppet making routine were various students and parents created their own puppet to take home that night. Prime Time Tumbling also provided some tumbling demonstration where students and parents practiced their tumbling abilities. The Lancaster City Mayor attended the event and talked about the importance of afterschool programs and encouraged everyone in attendance to support after school programs. He then, proclaimed October 18, 2008 the Lights On Afterschool Day! Each student received a free book, a bag of goodies and a Lights On Afterschool light bulb or bracelet. Among those who performed we had Millersville University students, Salsa Dance, Taekwondo Network, Imani Edu-Tainers, Drill Team, Abandon Lyrics, and others. Tony the Tiger and Estrella the Clown were also among our attendees. With around 300 participants the event was full of fun activities, entertainment, refreshments and more.

The Lights on Event was definitely an enlighting experience at Vare Beacon!! The night begin with our Beacs (ages 9-14) and Beaconeers (ages 5-8) showcasing their skills and talents. They decorated the auditorium with the light bulbs they had colored and created raps and poems about what the afterschool program means to them. Some groups acted out their raps while others participated in a dance routinue. After a very entertaining performance from the youth, we invited guest speakers out to speak with the parents and youth about fire prevention, and safety in their schools and communities. Our guest list included a representative from the fire and police department, Men United for a Better Philadelphia, P.A.A.N, and Kenyata Johnson- Community Service Liasion. We also had vendors come out and share information pamplets and other resources with the parents. Thanks to our Beacon participants and the guest speakers the event was a big success!
