  • Our seven City of Decatur afterschool programs each created a banner representing their program and Lights On Afterschool. Our program staff invited parents and children to join us on Saturday October 13th to march in the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival Parade representing Lights On Afterschool and Decatur Recreation Department. We followed the fire truck through Oakhurst and got plenty of cheers and applause from the crowd. On Thursday October 18th we set up Lights On tables and encouraged parents to sign lightbulbs we plan to send to our local politicians reminding them of the importance of supporting afterschool funding for all!

  • Our Lights On program was planned and executed by a committee of 10 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. The committee members met throughout September to plan the event deciding on refreshments, entertainment and decorations. We had a dj/karaoke, hot wings and sno cones! The committee did a great job and the rest of the students showed their appreciation with a big round of applause. The students had a great time singing, dancing and eating! We even had parents out dancing with the students as well as staff members getting into the groove!

  • To celebrate Lights On, we had a talent show with all our students participating. Our winners won a spot to do their act on the program that we planned later that evening. The program consisted of three different dances and at the end of the program we had a "surprise" for the parents. They had to dance on the song "Cupid Shuffle". We had a good time wacthing them dance. Afterwards we had refreshments, it was a lot of fun and laughs. Everyone enjoyed our Lights On celebration

  • The M. Janet Chin Youth Foundation presented Lights On with 130 community members and students participating. Local Media covered our event. Senate Majority Leader, Gloria Romero presented a certificate, Mayor of Rosemead, John Tran presented a Proclamation and The Garvey School District presented a certificate to the MJCYF for our commitment to youth enrichment and their communities and the school band performed. We partnered up with the Mary Pickford Institute's Mobile Film Classroom and students created a 3-5 minute dvd of their version of "Why afterschool is Important to Me"; a video for kids, made by kids, arts and crafts, decorating Light Bulbs, team structure building for prizes and many giveaways were presented to the kids. We were very successful in shedding light on after school programs and will continue to work with the city in coming up with a plan to service all kids who live in our city. Thanks Lights On Afterschool! staff for continuing to bring great things to kids! Always moving forward...

  • The Tyndall Air Force Base Youth Center in Panama City Florida celebrated "Lights on Afterschool" yesterday with a family social and art exhibit with youth-made cookies, hors d'oerves, and popcorn. Youth ages 5 to 18 created various types of "light bulbs" which were prominently displayed in art gallery fashion. One creative teacher encouraged the youth to form a human lightbulb, photographed it and a celebration poster was made. We had a fabulous celebration and we are already thinking of ideas for next year! :o)
