PRESTON COUNTY, WV TURNS LIGHTS ON For AFTER SCHOOL By Lauren Duckworth Junior Volunteer After School Explorers from Kingwood Elementary Seven different schools' After School programs, along with community partners, volunteers, and other related programs were involved on Thursday October 18, 2007 between 6:30 - 8:30 pm in Lights on After School. Lights On is a way of saying and seeing how important and fun After School can be. This year Lights On was held at the Craig Civic Center in Kingwood, West Virginia. At the Civic Center each site has a booth to show what they do to have fun and be helpful to children after school. Other related programs like the Parent Educator Resource Center(PERC), 4H, Family Resource Network, Starting Points and the Preston County Health Department provided information and activities along with special presentations like a drum maker, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Karaoke, and face painting were held for extra fun. Lights On provided food and prizes, FREE, all night. It was pure fun, and more than 450 people were in attendance!

Jefferson Youth Foundation, Inc. celebrated Lights On Afterschool at two schools, Ames Elementary and Butler Elementary in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on Thursday, October 18, 2007. We held a rally with 200 students and their parents who colored light bulbs; held a cheering contest; attended a book give-away where each child received 5 books to take home and share with their family; and an obstacle course competition to highlight the afterschool program's emphasis on Health and Nutrition. Kids and parents alike enjoyed nachos, fruit snacks, fruit juices and distilled water as they ran along the obstacle course, checked their weight and body fat, and listened to speaker, Melody Robinson from LSU Health Sciences Center as she gave a quick lesson on healthy lifestyle decision-making. Everyone in attendance had a good time, and to top it all off, door prizes including movie tickets, alarm clocks, T-shirts, gift cards, pens, and markers, were given to families who were randomly picked. With support from LA Campaign for Tobacco Free Living, information about the dangers of tobacco use was disseminated through collaterals such as pens, magnets, T-shirts and notepads. Once again, our "open door" policy allowed the community to see firsthand what goes on after school once the dismissal bell rings!

At Hawks Rise Elementary in Tallahassee, FL everyone is buzzing with excitement as the final hours count down before our Lights on Afterschool event begins. We began our planning weeks ago with t-shirt sales to promote recognition of our program. Some of our enrichment classes have been planning performances, like our dance club, cheerleading group, piano students and our kindergarteners. Art classes have been busy making banners for the event, and our light bulb art contests and speech contests proved to be a huge hit with our students. At 5pm this evening, we will begin our event, and family and friends will join us to watch the performances. We will have our speech contest winners read their essays aloud, and parents come up to comment on why Afterschool is important for them. Afterwards, we will invite everyone to participate in a variety of activities, including crafts, cooking, science and sports activities. We'll also serve hotdogs, chips & veggies, and a huge sheet cake to celebrate the event.

We've celebrated all week. Our before and afterschool kids had the first oportunity to meet a few business people in the community. Apopka Elementary Extended Day students and staff wore yellow shirts to celebrate "Lights on Afterschool', and we will serve cake in the shape of a light bulb, and lemonade to every person in the community and in the school that signs the petition. We will also be tye-dying tee-shirts yellow. Just another way to spread the word and increase awareness in the community.
